Royal Ascot is the crowning point for point for the Ascot racecourse, and is one of the most famous horse racing festivals in the world. With five days of exciting horse racing to look forward to, and the royal family in attendance everyday, this is one of the high points of both the horse racing and social calendar. Indeed there have been some complaints that the press coverage for who is in attendance and what they are wearing actually overshadows the racing. However, those with a passion for horse racing can overlook the celebrity side of it, and look forward to 7 Group 1 races over the festival, including the Ascot Gold Cup, all in all making Royal Ascot betting one of the most hotly contested horse racing betting events in the world.
With some of the most competitive races in the sport of flat racing attracting the best thoroughbred horses, Royal Ascot betting generates huge interest for experts and novices alike. Popular races for Ascot bets include the Prince of Wales Stakes, the King Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee. However the highlight of the festival is certainly the Ascot Gold Cup, which is open to four year olds and above and above and certainly sees the most Royal Ascot betting for the festival.
The betting preview for this years Royal Ascot looks very interesting, with Yeats looking to win an unprecedented fourth Ascot Gold Cup. He is currently with second favourite with Sky Bet at 7/2, with last years Queen’s Vase winner Patkai favourite at 3/1. Other horses expected to do well in the Royal Acot betting are Overdose, who runs in the King Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee, and Gladiatorus, who runs in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Queen Anne Stakes.

European player’s have an awful record in this event, the last European winner was back in 1969 in the shape of Tony Jacklin. With this in mind it is not surprising to see a number of top European players at long odds in the betting market. Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia and Padraig Harrington can all be backed respectively at best odds 28/1, 40/1 and 50/1 with either VC Bet or Sporting Odds.
Due to the poor performance of European players in this event, Americans such as Phil Mickleson are attracting a lot of support at best odds 7/1 with Ladbrokes and Bet 365. Top players from the rest of the world Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen are available at best odds 14/1 and 20/1 respectively with Stan James.
Skybet have offered a special market, betting without Woods and Mickleson. Without the two favourites, Tim Clark could be an interesting each-way bet at odds of 28/1. The South African has some impressive Major results over the past three seasons, including the 2003 PGA Championships where he finished 3 rd, and his 2 nd in the US Masters earlier this year. The Ryder Cup is the pinnacle of world Golf, and the 2008 Ryder Cup looks to be one of the most hotly contested events in recent years. The European team led by Nick Faldo are slight favourites to retain their crown at best odds 10/11 with Totesport, with the Americans not far behind at 11/8 with Bet 365. For anyone who fancies the tie, Stan James offer the best odds at 12/1.
The 2008 Ryder Cup contest looks like one of the hardest to call in recent times, and this is reflected in the betting with such little difference in odds between the two. The Americans appear to be dogged by a lack of team spirit, and many golf pundits have the opinion that Tiger Woods doesn’t play to his full ability when competing as part of a team.
The Europeans on the other hand appear to be in good form, especially Padraig Harrington who has now won 3 majors in just 13 months. This is the first time Europe have ever been odds on going into a Ryder Cup event on foreign soil (This years event is being heldat the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky September).
For anyone looking for a Ryder Cup special bet, the odds on a hole in 1 are 5/1 with Paddy Power.

The other main event coming to Wimbledon in June is the women’s single championship. Much like the men’s event there are several of the usual contenders in with a shout and some lesser known players as well. Free £25 bet from William Hill on Wimbledon
The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, have done fantastically well over recent years and have won 9 of the last 11 championships between them. This is why Serena, who already has 4 titles to her name, could well be the pretournament favourite and best priced at 5.0 with Betfred. Venus Williams though, is even better priced at 8.0 with Blue SQ, both of the sisters did though, miss out of the French Open in May due to injury.
The current top ranking Women’s player Caroline Wozniacki is also among the favourites and a good price at 9.0 with Victor Chandler. Although she has yet to win a major title, she could well be in with a chance after injuries have disrupted many of the more established players this season. Finally two time grand slam winner Kim Clijsters is also in the running for the championship after returning from injury in March, and the Belgian is looking a good bet at 5.5 with Bwin. There is also Maria Sharapova, the former Wimbledon winner, who has re-established herself recently and is also in with a shout. The Russian also has good early odds of 5.0 from Bodog.

The event that has all of Britain watching and hoping comes again in June as top tennis players from around the world descend on Wimbledon. Many Britons will be supporting Andy Murray who is once again bidding to become the first British men’s champion since Fred Perry in 1936, and the Scotsman could be a decent outside bet at 8.5 with Victor Chandler, despite not being in great form this year. Although there is still plenty of strong competition coming in the form of the usual suspects and perhaps a few surprises.
Rafael Nadal is the pre-tournament favourite and best priced at 3.43 with WBX, as the Spaniard is currently number 1 in the ATP men’s ranking. Roger Federer is also one of the favourites after winning the competition an impressive 6 times and lying just one behind all time holder Pete Sampras. Federer is still amongst the favourites but has a bit more value at 5.5 from Boylesports considering his recent record in the competition. Another favourite and perhaps a bit of a surprise is Novak Djokovic who is currently second favourite and best priced at 4.0 with Bet365. The 24-year-old Serb has been in red hot form this year though and could well be in with a shot at winning his first Wimbledon title. Get a free £25 bet on Wimbledon with William Hill.
