Liverpool Form: DDWLW
Last Sunday’s 2 – 2 draw with Manchester City will give Brendan Rodger’s men a major boost of confidence heading into this encounter; despite an unfortunate late equaliser being gifted to the Champions after an error from Martin Skrtel, Liverpool largely outplayed City and were well worth three points. Still though, Rodgers will take positives from his sides performance, particularly 17 year old starlet Raheem Sterling who was given a surprise start on the left wing. A slightly understrength Reds side also narrowly squeezed past a determined Hearts team in the Europa League in mid week – fans will be delighted to have European football back on Merseyside, even if it is not the Champions League just yet. Check out the free bets available for the game here.
Liverpool began the season with a shocking 3 – 0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion, with defenders Daniel Agger and Skrtel surprisingly poor in the loss. Agger will return on Sunday after being sent off in that game. Last season, they were two of the best centre backs in the league and Liverpool will need them to start performing again if they are to keep out an Arsenal team determined to score it’s first goal of the season. Up front, Suarez has been his usual self; never giving defenders time to settle and showing he is capable of moments of brilliance, however it is questionable whether he is a good finisher, with numerous chances being squandered by the Uruguayan. Rodgers has sought to address this problem by recruiting former Chelsea youngster Fabio Borini. The Italian worked with Rodgers during his time at Swansea and proved that he was a confident finisher. Rodgers will be hoping that in Suarez and Borini, backed up by the possible arrival of Fulham’s Clint Dempsey, Liverpool will have enough firepower to improve considerably on last season’s return of just 47 goals.
Arsenal: Form: DDWDL
It has been yet another painful summer for Arsenal fans, last summer they lost arguably their two best players in Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, and it appears they have done so again in Robin van Persie and Alex Song. Last summer though, Wenger made some shrewd acquisitions in the transfer market; his capture of Mikel Arteta proved to be a fine bit of business. This season another Spaniard has been brought in, this time in the form of Santi Cazorla, and he has had a fine start to the season, setting up numerous chances for his new team mates.
However, Arsenal have yet to score this season and whilst some fans may panic as they think “RVP would have buried that”, it would only be fair to give his replacements Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud time to settle. On a more positive note, at the other end of the pitch two clean sheets out of two shows a remarkable improve in defence on last season, something that could possibly be attributed to the arrival of former centre back Steve Bould as assistant manager. They will need to be on top form again to keep out a Liverpool team determined to get a first win of the season under their belt.
Match Prediction: Draw 3.30
With Steven Gerrard’s return to full fitness and Nuri Sahin and Joe Allen’s arrivals, Liverpool look strong in the centre park. They have 3 players there all very capable of providing many chances to their strikers. With last seasons solid defence, if Liverpool can capitalize on these chances, they could be a force this season. Likewise, if Arsenal’s new strikers adapt quickly then it could be a very interesting battle for a Champions League spot. Interestingly, Liverpool have won just one of their last ten league games against Arsenal, however in what will be a very hard game to call here I can see both teams cancelling each other out for a low scoring draw.

A small but select field will contest the latest renewal of the Group 3 Solario Stakes on Saturday and there are a couple of likeable two-year-olds to keep on side in the race over 7f. The Richard Hannon-trained Master Of War is going to be popular after his half-a-length defeat in better company last time and he looks more than capable of adding a race of this nature to his portfolio. Heavy Metal just got the better of him at Goodwood and that runner has since gone very close in the Gimcrack on which evidence Master Of War looks a worthy favourite. However, the odds about him obliging here might not be so generous and there could be reasons to oppose at likely short odds. The fact he has yet to race over 7f is a slight worry and although he has shaped previously as if the step up in trip will suit, his ability to see out the extra furlong has to be taken on trust. Check out all the free bets available for this race.
With that in mind, perhaps the better value may lie with Mocenigo from the Peter Chapple-Hyam yard, who came up against nothing when cantering to victory at Southwell last month but had run well on debut on Lingfield’s all-weather surface. It is a big jump into Pattern company but this likeable colt holds three further Group race entries and is clearly held in high regard by connections and he might be worth chancing at attractive odds. The form of that debut second hasn’t really worked out but this son of Refuse To Bend could be anything and judging by his eye-catching entries much better is expected in time.
Hasopop is interesting on the back of his seven-length demolition job in a Class 2 two-year-old conditions event at Newmarket last time. At first glance that result might flatter him as much better was expected of odds on favourite Bircham in the three-runner affair but he ran on really well in the hands of Ryan Moore and should appreciate this extra furlong. The only worry is that Marco Botti’s inmate might be better with a little cut underfoot and if any rain was to arrive his chances could increase.
Another who could well go on to be much better than this level is Godolphin’s Tha’Ir who really caught the eye when a creditable fourth in the Vintage Stakes after racing up with the pace for most of the race. This colt by New Approach finished only a length behind the highly regarded Olympic Glory and a repeat of that effort would see him go very close again here. He won the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot over 7f and has certainly had the beating of Chilworth Icon, who reopposes here, on both occasions.
William Buick and Jeremy Noseda team up with Newmarket Novice Stakes winner Fantastic Moon who will be bidding to extend his unbeaten tag after a pleasing debut. He knuckled down well for this rider to beat the well-fancied Snowboarder by half-a-length and it would be foolish to rule him out of calculations although he is going to have to improve a great deal again to take this. Ensure you make the most of Cheltenham 2013 with free bets.
The Irish challenge rests with Dont Bother Me for trainer Niall Moran after his comfortable Leopardstown success last time. The ground and trip should be fine for him but he might just bump into a more useful rival.

This Friday’s European Super Cup sees the winners of the Champions’ League take on the winners of the Europa League. Chelsea have been transformed in terms of personnel and style since their triumph in Europe’s elite competition whilst Atletico are playing in a similar style, again relying on the goals of the prolific Radamel Falcao. Both teams have history in the competition with Chelsea claiming victory in 1998 and Atletico as recently as 2010, when they beat Inter 2-0. Check out the free bets available for the game here.
Chelsea League Form: WWW
Chelsea have looked imperious in the league so far this season having notched up three straight victories. This season has seen a shift from the robust, efficient Chelsea unit of the past to a more dynamic and attack minded team. Eden Hazard looks a sensational purchase but in the past has struggled to reach such dizzying heights in the so called bigger games, including the preseason run out in the Community Shield against the reigning champions of the Premier League. That said, Hazard will definitely be a threat and his incredible record for winning penalties may be something to look at; this knack has resulted in Frank Lampard scoring two from the spot in two league starts and, having been rested on Saturday, he should be back in the starting line-up come Friday evening. Nine points out of nine in the league so far cannot be ignored but at the same time they are yet to face any real quality in opposition. Having scored eight goals without really getting out of second gear, we can expect at least a couple more goals in this match. However, questions remain over the defensive side of the team, with a very average Reading team managing to score twice. Despite managing to keep a clean sheet against a fatigued Newcastle (they played in Europe less the 48 hours before kick-off), I can’t see the defence managing to contain the attacking prowess of Radamel Falcao.
Atletico Madrid League Form: W
Atletico won the Europa League for the second time in three years destroying fellow Spaniards Bilbao in the final 3-0. Having taken four points from their two La Liga games so far, Atletico have made a promising start to their season and sit in fourth, ten places above their arch rivals Real. It will come as no surprise as I have already mentioned him several times, but Radamel Falcao really is a huge threat up front; he scored an impressive hat-trick in front of the home crowd on Monday evening. Atletico have a fairly solid defence with the experienced Diego Godin at the heart of it. However, like Chelsea, they are yet to encounter a world class attack in the league this season and I really can’t see the likes of Juanfran and Felipe Luis managing to contain the trident of Mata, Hazard and a rejuvenated Torres for 90 minutes.
In my opinion, it is fairly clear that there will be goals in this game and, these goals may come fairly even in the game so I would look towards bets that reflect this. Chelsea go into the games as slight favourites having won the premier competition rather than the cup that many clubs consider a nuisance on a Thursday night. I see the match going accordingly but I don’t think it will be plain sailing as Atletico’s attack should never be underestimated and may highlight the lack of pace from John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. The game may even go all the way to penalties when it really will be a lottery as to who wins.
Highlighted Bets – From Bet 365

Two of last season’s greatest surprise packages, outside of the back-and-forth battle for the top spot in the Premier League, must surely belong to Newcastle and Chelsea, who both delivered well above expectations, in two entirely different manners. Chelsea, who started disappointingly lacklustre last season, dropped Andres Villas Boas as the man at the helm in March, a pivotal point in the season, and allowed the second-in-command Roberto Di Matteo to take charge. Much to the surprise of football fans everywhere, Di Matteo lead his Chelsea side to Champions League glory, seeing off the likes of holders Barcelona in a dramatic competition, and beating Bayern Munich on their own turf to take home gold. Perhaps the only feat which surprised so many would be Newcastle’s stunning performance which saw them finish fifth in the Premier League at the end of a fantastic and goal-ridden season for the Toon, a meteoric rise from their 12th place finish the season before. Check out our choice of free bet offers ahead of this game.
This all points to a tantalising fixture this weekend (Saturday 25th, K.O. 5:30pm) at Stamford Bridge, as both teams enter the match looking to continue their 100% starts to the season. Without doubt, Newcastle will come to the Blues’ home with the firepower that saw them win two goals to nil in May, with both Papisse Cisse and Demba Ba, coming off the back of a fabulous goal last weekend against champions-league rivals Spurs, due to lead the charge. With the two Senegalese strikers heading a team which has continued to grow in talent and confidence, they are certain to provide Chelsea with a severe test, though it is expected that there will, as always, be a deep back-line and crowded midfield to break down Chelsea’s rampant style at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, being the only current team to have won two fixtures in this year’s season, will be looking to capitalise on the momentum gained from their 2-0 win at Wigan and 4-2 comeback against Reading in midweek. With Roberto Di Matteo confirmed in the driving seat now, and with a fresh season ahead of him to build on their victory in Munich last May, Chelsea look to be one of the only teams capable of standing up to the might of the Manchester clubs for the premier League title in 2012/13. The squad has gone from strength to strength also, as Roman Ibramovich once again dipped in to his pockets to bring in the likes of Eden Hazard and Marko Marin to bolster the club, with the likelihood of Wigan’s Victor Moses joining becoming closer and closer to reality. With the strength throughout the squad, and their ability to dismantle teams at home, expect Chelsea to come out looking to kill the game off early and focus on neutralising Newcastle’s front men, all the time seeking to take the lead as Fernando Torres remains hungry for goal glory.
A score draw seems on the cards if Newcastle can withstand the early onslaught and perhaps snatch a goal themselves on the break. 1-1, or perhaps even 2-2, and most from Paddy Power to Blue SQ are offering 3/1 or similar on the draw. However, if Chelsea can score early on they could win comfortably given the array of short odds from Bet365, SkyBet, and Betfred, who all offer 1/2 on a Chelsea victory. Chelsea could well be continuing their lead at the top of the table for another week, but you can never write off one of the game’s current great entertainers. With many of us still trying to catch our breath at Frankel’s sublime seven length demolition job in the Juddmonte International on Wednesday, attention must though switch to one of the biggest betting handicaps of the racing calendar as York prepares to stage the latest renewal of its showpiece event – the Betfred Ebor, over 1m6f. Since the final declarations were made on Thursday, heavy downpours of rain changed the going description to good, from good to firm, good in places and quicker conditions now look unlikely with further forecast rain expected before Saturday. Make sure you check out our list of free bets available for this race here.
But that news, however, is perhaps less of a hindrance to the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Motivado, ante-post favourite for the Betfred Ebor, after his 4Ib penalty for an impressive victory at Glorious Goodwood ensured he made the cut for the valuable 20-runner handicap. The four-year-old son of Motivator had been trading around the 9-2 mark prior to Thursday lunchtime’s draw, where he was allocated stall number 8 and has since been trimmed into 7-2 across the board. Sir Mark took this very race 18 years ago with Hasten To Add, and this assignment looks to have been the plan for Motivado since his going away win under Luke Morris on the Sussex Downs three weeks ago. Shouldering just 8-12, Motivado certainly looks to hold a favourrite’s chance in the race and with the trip and ground both fine he is likely to be thereabouts at the business end of the contest. But as market leaders go, and especially those as short as him, there are reasons for opposing and the way he dropped out so tamely at York on his penultimate start is a worry. He also finished well down the pecking order on his only other visit to the Knavesmire last August, therefore his likeness for this venue has to be taken on trust.
And for those against Sir Mark’s flagbearer on the grounds that his price is far too short will be pleased to read that four out of the last five Ebor winners have returned at 25-1, 14-1, 25-1 and 100-1. On that evidence, Tominator must enter calculations at 20-1, if he is able to recapture the form of his 2011 Northumberland Plate win at Newcastle. Reg Hollinshead’s charge has been disappointing in his two runs so far this term but should strip fitter for his latest Haydock outing. Arguably few horses arrive in better form than the John Holt-trained Number Theory, who added the Old Newton Cup to his portfolio last month. Now rated 5Ib higher, he will not mind softening underfoot conditions but all his four wins to date have come around Haydock.
Course specialist Crackentorp is one to note seriously having won three times at the course over 1m4f. Trained locally by Tim Easterby, he stayed on well to take second behind Ile De Re on bottomless ground in this year’s Northumberland Plate but was disappointing in the Silver Cup last time out. It is a similar story for Area Fifty One, who will have the services of Kieren Fallon for the first time, who might have been a shade unfortunate at York last time when squeezed for room and stumbling when about to deliver his challenge. He stayed on at the one pace to finish five lengths back in fifth and although he is untried beyond 1m4f, he has shaped as if the extra distance might suit. With the Cheltenham Festival you can profit from hefty free bet offers from top UK bookmakers.
John Gosden and William Buick are in flying form and there was much to like about the lightly-raced Camborne’s victory in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Ascot in June. Buick’s mount met trouble in running but ran on strongly to lead inside the furlong pole with Hammerfest and Harrison’s Cave – who reoppose again here – back in second and third respectively. Chelsea got off to a steady start on Sunday with a 2-0 home win against Wigan. They were largely untested in that fixture and should expect a sterner test against Reading but should have enough to in their locker to secure the three points. They are likely to be without the influential Ramires although he may step in to midfield in place of Ryan Bertrand and Marko Marin is still unavailable to make his debut. New signing Eden Hazard had a big part to play in both goals against Wigan and is hotly tipped to open his account on Wednesday night; Skybet is offering an attractive price boost of 6.5 to be first goalscorer.
Reading got a good point in their first fixture back in the premier league after a four year exodus. They battled well to draw 1-1 with Stoke, the team that wealthy owner Anton Zingarevich has stated he wants his new club to emulate. That said we can expect this Reading side to dig their heels in and play defensively and aggressively from the first whistle. Paddy Power is offering 6.5 for a card to be shown to a Reading player in the first fifteen minutes and the same odds to have a player sent off at any time. Goalkeeper Robert Federici apologised for his howler which caused Stoke’s goal and will be looking to make a mends, especially after the signing of experienced keeper Stuart Taylor so expect to see him on form.
Match Prediction: Chelsea Win 1-0
Reading have only taken one point from Chelsea in four previous meetings and have failed to win at Stamford Bridge in nine attempts so history is stacked against McDermott’s side although I doubt he will be concerned about that when preparing his team for this one. It promises to be an enticing affair but I think Chelsea will have enough to win this one, although it would not be overly surprisingly if Reading scrape a draw again as they will need no motivation for this one. Paddy Power are offering a tempting 9 for a 1-1 draw. If Chelsea are to close the gap on the Manchester clubs and improve on last season’s sixth place then it is essential they put a run together early season and for that reason I think Roberto Di Matteo will have them focused for this one and see them edging 1-0, again Paddy Power are offering good odds on this with 6.
Eden Hazard first goalscorer- 6.5 Skybet
Readingto have a player sent off- 6.5 Paddy Power
Reading to be shown a card in first fifteen minutes- 6.5 Paddy Power
Chelsea win 1-0- 6 Paddy Power

Newcastle United
It will be hard for Newcastle to replicate the form of last season. 5th place was a fantastic finish for Alan Pardew’s men but with both Chelsea and Liverpool strengthening well over the summer, it looks like it’ll be a big ask for them to hit the same levels of success. They do however, possess a fine team and despite not signing too many players over the summer, the Toon Army will be delighted that they have managed to keep key players such as Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohann Cabaye and Senegalese strike duo Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba at the club. Both Cisse and Ba were prolific last season, although Ba’s decline in form after Cisse’s arrival will concern supporters. Signing Ajax’s Vurnon Anita was a smart bit of business from Pardew – a player who can more than hold his own at left back and in central midfield. The Magpie’s other main summer signing was midfielder Romain Amalfitano, an attacking midfielder that joined on a free from Stade de Reims. He becomes the seventh French player on Newcastle’s books at the moment. Worryingly for the Geordies though, there are fitness doubts over Ba, Cisse, Cabaye and Ben Arfa – arguably their four best players.
Tottenham Hotspur
Not many fans expected the departure of Harry Redknapp after another top 4 finish, but here we are at the beginning of the 2012/13 campaign with Andre Villas-Boas at the helm. The Luka Modric saga is one that has dragged on all summer, but he finally seems set to finalise his £30 million departure to La Liga giants Real Madrid. Villas-Boas has bought well in Jan Vertonghen and Gylffi Sigurdsson but there appears to be an alarmingly small amount of firepower up front. Experienced England striker Jermain Defoe appears to be the only established Premier League striker in the squad. They were unable to tie up a deal for Emmanuel Adebayor and unless they can bring in a prolific forward, you worry about where the goals are going to come from.
Match Prediction: Draw – 3.00 at William Hill
Both teams to score – 1.67 at William Hill
Emmanuel Adebayor was arguably the missing link for Spurs last season; a consistent striker that can put the ball in the back of the net. He will need to be replaced, however I can still see goals here. There were 9 scored over the two games between these sides last season and both teams to score seems to be a good bet to me. It will be hard to separate two sides that finished just one place apart last season. Spurs have failed to win at Newcastle in their last six outings there however if the home sides injury worries are confirmed it could be a different story for travelling supporters.

With Glorious Goodwood just around the corner it is the turn of York to play host to yet more top quality racing on Saturday and the renewal of the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes looks as competitive as ever. The Sir Henry Cecil-trained Twice Over landed the spoils in the race last year and the Newmarket handler tries again this time around with recent listed winner Jet Away in the 1m2f contest. However, there is a strong army of challengers in the 11-runner field including Group 1 winner Planteur now trained by Marco Botti and Luca Cumani’s listed winner Afsare, who currently head the top two in the betting. Choose from over £500 in free bets for this race.
Afsare Consistent performer over both a mile and ten furlongs and stayed on well to justify favouritism in a listed contest at Sandown when last seen. He was second only to Crackerjack King in a Group 1 in Italy on his penultimate run and with conditions in his favour (best form has come on a sound surface) he looks sure to make a bold under usual rider Kieren Fallon.
Hunter’s Light Progressive last season in listed company but hasn’t quite gone on as a 4yo this season yet for trainer Saeed Bin Suroor. Probably out of his depth when seventh of 12 in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last time and difficult to see him featuring here.
Jet Away Course and distance winner at York when notching a conditions event last October and has since shown his hand in listed company at Goodwood on good to firm ground. A line can be drawn through his wide margin defeat at Pontefract latest over a trip beyond his best and he must be taken seriously for a stable that won this contest twelve months ago.
Marcret Done most of his racing in his native Italy prior to joining current trainer Marco Botti but got off the mark on British soil at the first time of asking when landing a Group 3 race at Chester. Not so good next time in a similar contest at Epsom and is now thrown into much hotter company and place claims at best.
Pekan Star One of two Roger Varian runners but hung badly on his reappearance last month when stone wall last in a handicap at Epsom and unlikely to trouble the judge here.
Planteur High-class performer in France winning a Group 1 at Longchamp last year and ran a real good race to finish third behind Monterosso in the Dubai World Cup. Ran no sort of race when seen in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes last time and was keen enough throughout so if that run can be forgiven he must hold a serious chance on his second start for new yard.
Premio Loco Oldest of the eleven runners but has several Group 2 wins to his name but could make no impression in the Queen Anne behind runaway leader Frankel. Perhaps best to judge his recent form on his pair of Group 3 wins on the all-weather and in Sweden and although difficult to assess that bare form, at least remains in good heart.
Ransom Note Been more than a shade disappointing this year when well held at Newmarket and then beaten a long way from home in the Lockinge Stakes. Has form on good to firm ground though and at likely larger odds may well run into a place if recapturing the form of his Group 2 success at Newmarket last season. Have a more profitable Cheltenham Festival this year with generous free bets.
Side Glance Looked to run a career best when a close second to Excelebration in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. And although he might have been slightly flattered to finish so close, he is clearly on the up after a subdued start to the campaign and must be enter calculations.
Sri Putra Consistent type who was outclassed in the Eclipse Stakes last time but might well appreciate this lesser company and could easily outrun his odds. Certainly the stables first string on jockey bookings and may well be scrapping it out for minor honours.
Wigmore Hall Been on the go since March when running creditably in a pair of Meydan Group 1 races. Ninth in the Prince Of Wales’s last time but all his wins have come on ground described as good or faster and previous course and distance form a massive plus; respected.
A real trappy affair and one which could be may well go to one of those at the head of the betting. However, the vote goes to SIDE GLANCE who stayed on well in the Queen Anne to suggest he can return to winning ways once more. Planteur and Jet Away are to be feared and Wigmore Hall might be one to keep a close eye on with likely ground in his favour. Get a £25 free bet on this race from William Hill.
