A small but select field will contest the latest renewal of the Group 3 Solario Stakes on Saturday and there are a couple of likeable two-year-olds to keep on side in the race over 7f. The Richard Hannon-trained Master Of War is going to be popular after his half-a-length defeat in better company last time and he looks more than capable of adding a race of this nature to his portfolio. Heavy Metal just got the better of him at Goodwood and that runner has since gone very close in the Gimcrack on which evidence Master Of War looks a worthy favourite. However, the odds about him obliging here might not be so generous and there could be reasons to oppose at likely short odds. The fact he has yet to race over 7f is a slight worry and although he has shaped previously as if the step up in trip will suit, his ability to see out the extra furlong has to be taken on trust. With that in mind, perhaps the better value may lie with Mocenigo from the Peter Chapple-Hyam yard, who came up against nothing when cantering to victory at Southwell last month but had run well on debut on Lingfield’s all-weather surface. It is a big jump into Pattern company but this likeable colt holds three further Group race entries and is clearly held in high regard by connections and he might be worth chancing at attractive odds. The form of that debut second hasn’t really worked out but this son of Refuse To Bend could be anything and judging by his eye-catching entries much better is expected in time.
Hasopop is interesting on the back of his seven-length demolition job in a Class 2 two-year-old conditions event at Newmarket last time. At first glance that result might flatter him as much better was expected of odds on favourite Bircham in the three-runner affair but he ran on really well in the hands of Ryan Moore and should appreciate this extra furlong. The only worry is that Marco Botti’s inmate might be better with a little cut underfoot and if any rain was to arrive his chances could increase.
Another who could well go on to be much better than this level is Godolphin’s Tha’Ir who really caught the eye when a creditable fourth in the Vintage Stakes after racing up with the pace for most of the race. This colt by New Approach finished only a length behind the highly regarded Olympic Glory and a repeat of that effort would see him go very close again here. He won the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot over 7f and has certainly had the beating of Chilworth Icon, who reopposes here, on both occasions.
William Buick and Jeremy Noseda team up with Newmarket Novice Stakes winner Fantastic Moon who will be bidding to extend his unbeaten tag after a pleasing debut. He knuckled down well for this rider to beat the well-fancied Snowboarder by half-a-length and it would be foolish to rule him out of calculations although he is going to have to improve a great deal again to take this. The Irish challenge rests with Dont Bother Me for trainer Niall Moran after his comfortable Leopardstown success last time. The ground and trip should be fine for him but he might just bump into a more useful rival.
