Both sides enter the New Year with losses but lingering at different positions in the league. Alan Pardew’s men scored six goals at Old Trafford and at the Emirates but still came away with zero points. Everton entertained European champions Chelsea on Sunday and after taking the lead they were unlucky to come away without any points. Both will be looking to start the year with a bang. Newcastle – 15th
Newcastle have conceded eleven goals in their last two games and if they are to win against Everton, their defence will need to improve. Tim Krul and Fabricio Coloccini were key to the Magpies performance last season. In recent weeks they have made errors but are capable of stepping up.
The future of star striker Demba Ba is still uncertain. It will be interesting to see whether Alan Pardew will continue to play him during the transfer period. If he continues to score he may attract more and more interest. However his goals will help Newcastle march up the table.
However the home side will still be without key men, Hartem Ben Arfa and Yohan Cabaye. Without these key men Newcastle are only three points above the relegation zone.
Everton – 6th
Everton were unfortunate not to draw or even win in their two one defeat to Chelsea. The defeat was the first at Goodison Park this season, and stopped the Toffee’s run of seven games without a loss.
Marouane Fellaini is expected to return to the eleven after finishing his three match suspension. The Belgium man will be key to Everton breaking down Newcastle and his height will help in offence and defence for set pieces.
David Moyes will hope his team can continue to push for a top four berth and sit only three points adrift from Tottenham who currently take up forth spot. Everton are notorious for being slow starters however this season has been different and the Merseyside blues could challenge for a Champions League spot.
Nikica Jelavic was a force when he first arrived in England last season. Hitting the woodwork twice last weekend showed the sort of form he is in. Luck can often disappear from a striker but the Croatian needs some to kickstart his form.
